JP BH Posta is the National Postal Service as started by the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina. While the history of the postal service in the region can be traced all the way back to the Roman Empire, the first letter sent via Sarajevo Post Office with a proper seal was in 1813 from Sarajevo to Lion. This was back when France Post was established in Sarajevo to maintain contact with the Ottoman Empire. Soon in 1878, new post offices had been opened in the region in the cities of Derventa, Doboj, Maglaj, Banja Luka, Sarajevo and Travniku under occupational military rules and were operational 24 hours a day. In the period from 1879 to 1918, the network of post offices expanded. One hundred new post offices were opened. During the Austro-Hungarian rule, 150 post offices were opened in total. Prior to World War II, there were 188 post offices, telegraph stations and telephones in BiH. In the last decade prior to WWII, the telephone network saw intensive development. The modest beginnings in introducing the automatic telephone exchange were recorded in Sarajevo, Ilidza and Trebinje. Following that, the organisation was accepted into the Universal Postal Union twice, once in 1892, and once 1993. There is much more history to the organisation that merely this.
