bpost is the Belgian National Postal Service as put into the public sector by the Government of Belgium. It is currently a Public Sector Service with 51% shares owned by the Belgian Government.
History
The company first came under the Belgian Government in 1830 with the arrival of the railway and the disappearance of the postal chariots. They started their first daily delivery scheme in 1841. They issued their first postal stamp in 1849. Fast forward to 1963 and a new law is passed stating that every house has to have its own letterbox. Postal Codes were first introduced in Belgium in 1969. In 1992, the company renamed for the second time and is dubbed De Post- La Poste. In 1997, shipments of up to 350g were allowed to be made by post for the first time. In 2000, the company was converted into a Public Sector Service under public law. In 2007, they opened their second sorting centre in Liege in addition to their already existing Brussels centre. In 2010, De Post-La Poste changed its name to what it is today, bpost.
